Q:
As promised, we're running the best of your feedback to our recent
LVA Reader Poll regarding your favorite off-Strip "locals" eateries. The response was tremendous and you picked some places that we heartily agree with, some less so, and plenty we've never heard of and are now curious to try. So, without further ado, here's what you said:
A:
- "My other is Lawry's Restaurant. It is the best prime rib!! We are originally from Chicago and would dine there often. Now that we live in Arizona, we can only enjoy Lawry’s fine dining when we are in Vegas."
- "Harbor Palace Seafood, 4275 Spring Mountain Rd #D101." [Ed: Ah, yes. This place is famous for its dim sum, although we have to say we prefer Chang's Hong Kong Cuisine and Ping Pang Pong, if that's what we have a taste for.]
- "Grimaldi’s pizza is the best I’ve ever had. I’ve been to the Richmar Plaza location a few times and could not recommend it more. I wish there was one on the Strip." [Ed: This one was a popular choice and a pick of our Eating Las Vegas authors for "Best Pizza."]
- "Chianti Cafe, Summerlin (1916 Village Center Circle)." [Ed: We haven't tried it, but the menu looks good and we like a place that's open for lunch.]
- "Sushi Yamaguchi on West Charleston." [Ed: Another one to add to our list of places to try.]
- "My vote is Texas de Brazil in the Town Square shopping center." [Ed: This I the first of a slew of Town Square picks. There's definitely some good eats out there – we were surprised that Cana, one of our faves, didn't score any votes in this poll.]
- "Love "Brio" Italian Restaurant . Atmosphere is great, food outstanding, great wine selection." [Ed: Another Town Square venue.]
- Tommy Bahamas in Town Square. Okay, I admit that I went there the first time because the chef is my friend’s son (Chef Shane came to you from North Florida – our loss, your gain). My faves: South Seas scallop sliders, the excellent fish tacos, and you can’t leave without sampling the pina colada cake. Island Time happy hour is usually a good time to stop by."
- "Miller's Ale House, Town Sq. Good food with reasonable prices." [Ed: This is a new place we haven't checked out yet.]
- "When in town this past weekend, we came across a place I believe was called Egg World, on Sahara near Buffalo. It's fairly new. The waitress was friendly, the place was clean and the food was good. The breakfast potatoes were excellent, seasoned with paprika and seasoning salt. It's not as fancy as Hash House A Go Go, and the portions weren't as large, but it was a good value. The receipt included a coupon for 25% off on the next visit, good Monday to Friday." [Ed: Sounds good. We think portions "not as big as HHAGG" is a plus! Check out the archives of the Las Vegas Sun for the controversy regarding Egg Works vs. Egg World, which could be dubbed the "Las Vegas Egg Wars."]
- "Pin Kaow 2 (Thai food)." [Ed: One of three popular Pin Kaow restaurants in the valley, this is the one located at Rainbow and Robindale in the southwest.]
- "The Hash House – or, as we refer to it, Mary's – is normally the first stop after we land. We almost always fly in early a.m. with the plan to go there first thing. Party hash is a must and the homemade jams are the best around!" [Ed: Note, this not to be confused with Hash House a Go Go, which is complicated by the fact that they're both now on W. Sahara. The HH was also a fave of Anthony Curtis when it was on Spring Mtn., it's not quite so convenient now, but still gets visited because yes, the hash is awesome and so are the homemade jams. We happen to know it's a favorite of the Teller half of Penn & Teller, too.]
- "Buffet Asia gets my vote." [Ed: This is from LVA Research Goddess Tanya, just FYI.]
- "I used to make Popeyes (fried chicken) a definite stop, because they didn't have any in the Bay area where I lived. I even took a boxed dinner home once in my carry-on bag, making a point of getting jambalaya as my side dish (non-liquid) instead of gumbo (a liquid) because of that 3-oz-limit thing (and because I didn't want my clothes to smell like gumbo). I even told the bag-checkers at the airport about my chicken in advance. So what did they do? The confiscated my sunblock. Like I'm gonna hijack a plain with a chicken leg & a tube of sunblock ... I'm not far from a Popeyes now, so that's no longer a must-do in LV, but I still love and look forward to my cherry-lime slushies at Sonic. Yumm." [Ed: Ha!]
- "Ellis Island - good food cheap, great beer, good odds at the casino."
- "Every time we're in Vegas, we have breakfast at least once at Blueberry Hill on E. Flamingo. The food is great and the waitresses are always friendly and helpful. The only problem is the uncomfortable plastic booths."
- "Geisha House Japanese Steak and Sushi! N Decatur (and I think there are about 3 more in the Valley)."
- "I would like to suggest Due Pizzeria. http://www.duepizzeria.com/ 384 East Tropicana Avenue."
- "Casa Don Juan on Main Street for excellent Mexican food."
- "I voted 'Other' and the place I have in mind is India Oven, which can be found on Paradise Rd, right around the corner from the Stratosphere. It's a small little place with maybe 10 tables, but they have consistently served the best Indian food I've ever had anywhere (including NY and LA.). Their chicken samosas are to die for, and the quality of their rice and bread is great. Match that with very reasonable prices and it's perfect. It's the only place in Vegas that I specifically make a point of going to on every trip." [Ed: This is one of the few Indian joints in town that the current writer – a Brit – has yet to try. I share your quest for good Indian food in N. America, but Las Vegas is definitely on the up in this department. Try Bollywood on W. Sahara, Shalimar (now located next to the Fat Greek at Flamingo and Decatur), and Mint Indian Bistro (formerly Himalayan Cuisine) on E. Flamingo, and we don't think you'll be disappointed.
This concludes the first part of your excellent feedback; tune in tomorrow for some more reader-recommended dining gems.
