Question of the Day - 22 December 2010

Q:
What do you know about the zip-line at Fremont Street? At first I heard it was temporary & now I heard rumors they will expand it to the full length of the Fremont Experience. I was hoping to get a group to come in May maybe do that if it will still be there. Are there weight restrictions? One friend is about 250 lbs.
A:

The Fremont Street Flightlines ride is a new venture from the company behind Bootleg Canyon Flightlines and is a much more affordable way to enjoy flying through the air.

The new attraction downtown debuted mid-October and has so far been extended through April 15. There are ongoing negotiations with the Fremont Street Experience and hopes that the ride will be a permanent fixture by the summer, and also extended to run the full length of the Fremont Street Experience -- right now, you launch from a 70-foot platform at the Hennessy's end of Fremont Street (by Las Vegas Blvd.) and end up in the vicinity of Binion's and the Four Queens. The drop is approximately 50 feet and you reach speeds of up to 35 mph. Anthony Curtis and the current writer tried it just after it opened and can confirm it's a lot of fun flying over the heads of bemused tourists on Fremont Street and underneath the light-show canopy and we highly recommend it.

As far as restrictions go, there are none on age, although those under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, but there are weight restrictions. 250lbs is the maximum, so your friend should just scrape in under the radar, as long as they don't underindulge at the buffet prior; there's also a minimum weight requirment of 60lbs, because if you're too light, you won't have the momentum to get to the end of the ride (this writer weighs almost 120lbs, but still had to be pulled in the last few feet).

If you check out the Fremont Street Flightlines website, you can view a couple of videos in the "Media" section that give a good impression of what the ride conisists of. Have fun - we did!
