Question of the Day - 17 January 2011

Q:
How can I get an Oscar Goodman bobblehead doll for my wife? I saw many different ones on his desk during a TV show.
A:

To our knowledge, none of the total of 11 Oscar Goodman bobblehead dolls that we’re aware of was ever offered for sale. The first, and others after it, was handed out in 2000 at a Las Vegas 51s baseball game while some, like the particularly rare Bombay Sapphire doll, were given out only to a select few at promotional events.

In 2006 the self-proclaimed "Happiest Mayor on Earth" chipped in about $10,000 of his own money to help pay for four new mayoral bobbleheads, one of which was given away each night to attendees at a conference of some 300 mayors from across the country, hosted by Las Vegas. Prior to this date there were seven official Goodman dolls in existence, featuring Oscar in a number of guises, including one of him in a pinstriped suit wielding a baseball bat and another flanked by one of his ever-present showgirls.

In terms of where you might get hold of one now, the only advice we can offers is to check in regularly on eBay, where we have seen them come up for auction every now and then. They’re sought after by collectors, so don’t expect to pick one up for a steal; the last two we saw had starting prices of $34.99 (for the Uncle Sam model) and $49.99 (a 51s doll).
