Question of the Day - 21 February 2011

Q:
Was wondering which Reader Poll has had the most votes, the least votes, and which survey has appeared to be the most controversial?
A:

That's an interesting question, which sent us delving back into the Poll Archives. It's hard to believe it's been more than three years since we launched the polls, back in September 2007. At the time, lots of people complained about the "loss" of QoDs, but we guess people just take awhile to get used to change, because these days the polls receive thousands of votes and often 100 or more attendant emails, so we figure you must like 'em.

It's hard to say which poll received the most votes, since some allow for multiple voting options and some don't, so you're not comparing apples to apples. In general, polls about food and drink receive the least number of votes -- the one we ran in December 2007 canvassing your thoughts specifically on Chicago-style pizza garnered only 357 votes (Chicago Brewing Company was the winner) -- but that's no surprise when the topic is so niche and even these yield useful information. This January's "best hot dog" poll got more than 1,600 votes and some great feedback, for example.

Polls that inquire about your Las Vegas experiences, good and bad, seem to get your juices flowing, as do any nostalgia-based ones asking about memories of the Las Vegas of yesteryear. The most votes we came across while researching this, however, were for the August, 2009 poll about what coupons you'd most like to see in that year's Member Rewards Book. That one received a staggering 23,337 responses.

As to controversy, we'd have to say that the poll on hotel resort fees (March, 2010) definitely touched a nerve, with more than 70% of the 4290 voters "hating" them. The poll about smoking in casinos (November, 2007) was definitely a polarizer and received almost 5,000 votes back in the day when polls weren't even that popular -- not to mention a lot of passionate emails from both sides of the fence. Polls about online gambling and the legal gambling age have also split people down the middle. In fact, it feels like time to put a cat among the pigeons again, so we'll think up something controversial for an upcoming poll -- or feel free to submit your own suggestions.

For anyone who hasn't browsed the Poll Archives, we've lost count of how many we've run since we launched them back in September, 2007, but we know it's a lot and there's a wealth of useful information in there. Plus, many of our readers are pretty hilarious, so you can have some giggles reading through the email comments they submit.
