Giant hot dogs were a fad of the '80s and '90s, with several credible contenders served around town. The king of the giant weiners, however, was always the notorious 3/4 pound Mega Dog, a fixture at Westward Ho until the property closed in November 2005.
Your question turned out to be a timely one, since when we called Slots A Fun to make sure they were still serving their infamous footlong, we discovered the hot dog stand closed in mid-February. The half-pounder, the price of which fluctuated but which generally sold for 99¢, before going up to $1.99 early in 2010, is now served at the West Side Deli at Circus Circus next door.
The only colossus remaining, to our knowledge, is the 22" "Monster Dog" at the Longhorn, available from the Chuck Wagon for $9.99, although a new dog has recently entered the arena in the form of Casino Royale's new footlong "skinny dog," which we reviewed thusly in the February issue of the LVA newsletter:
"Casino Royale has a new foot-long hot dog for $1.99. The long skinny dog extends beyond its bun on both ends and comes with mustard, catsup, onions, and relish; you can add chili, cheese, or kraut for 75¢ each. The dogs are served from the Snack Nook, located at the back of the casino in the new food court, available daily from 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. Sat-Sun). Combine with a $1 Michelob from the bar [an LVA Top Ten Value] and you have a powerful dog-and-brew parlay."
A call to Serendipity 3 at Caesars Palace revealed that they discontinued their 15-inch "Bachelorette Dog," which came with 10 toppings and could feed four or more people, late last summer. They now just serve a regular footlong for $14.50, no less (that's plain; add more for extra toppings, like guacamole).
If you're in the mood for an over-sized eating experience, check out the Question of the Day for July 24, 2009 (since updated on several occasions), where you can learn where to find giant pizza, steak, burrito, and burger specials, many of which are free if you can finish them solo within the time allotted.
For those to whom size isn't everything, check out the LVA Reader Poll we ran last year, regarding who serves the best hot dog in Las Vegas.
