Question of the Day - 02 April 2011

Q:
I have chemical sensitivities. Are there any non-chlorinated pools in Las Vegas?
A:

To the best of our knowledge, the only two non-chlorinated public pools in Las Vegas are the 2,500 and 3,500-square-foot saltwater pools at MGM Grand’s Wet Republic, pioneer of the so-called "Daylife" scene.

The pool is open to the public, with cover usually $20 for ladies and $40 for men (including MGM Grand hotel guests), although this varies with events.

Ironically, it was also MGM Grand that last August was the scene of a major evacuation after after a chlorine leak occurred in the Lazy River in the main hotel-pool complex. About 100 people were treated for breathing difficulties. The water in the Lazy River – which is not connected to the resort's other pools – became over-chlorinated after a pump malfunctioned and chlorine gas began evaporating off the water, filling the pool area with a noxious smell. Staff responded quickly and shut off the offending valve, which got stuck in the "on" position. 26 guests were hospitalized, but no one was seriously injured in the incident.
