Question of the Day - 23 July 2011

Q:
Today's is a two-parter on a common theme: "What happened to the Augustus Cafe at Caesars Palace? Is it closed or being refurbished?" And: "I was recently on the Excalibur's website checking on the breakfast specials that were being offered at Dick's Last Resort and noticed that the Sherwood Forest Cafe wasn't listed any longer. Did Excalibur close their coffee shop?"
A:

The Augustus Cafe at Caesars is closed for a remodel and is due to open late summer as a 24/7 Cafe.

Excalibur's Sherwood Forest Cafe, however, is closed for good, to be replaced this winter by American Burger Works and Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ and Beer.

It's the latest casino coffee shop to either bite the dust completely, like Lucky's at the Stratosphere, or else cut hours, like Casino Café at Bally's or Sao Paolo Cafe at the Rio. On the other hand, the Coco's chain is out at Stations' properties, where the Grand Cafe coffee shops are back, so it's not all bad news. Plus, when at one time coffee shops were about the only option for hungry night owls, these days Las Vegas offers myriad late-night dining options (click the black button for a list), both in the casinos and in some of the cooler ethnic neighborhood restaurants, so there's no need to starve.
