Question of the Day - 24 July 2011

Q:
A Las Vegas bar called Rounders has a coupon that pays a $20 bonus for a "straight to the 8," but it doesn't explain what that means. Does a straight to the 8 end on 8, begin on 8, or simply include 8 anywhere in the straight?
A:

Usually, and definitely at Rounders, a "straight to the 8" means the 8 is the last card in the straight, including straight flushes. So 45678 in any suit combination qualifies, while straights like 89TJQ and 56789 do not.

Bob Dancer calculates the bonus as being worth about 3.2%, which puts the 6/5 Bonus Poker schedule returning 96.87% in positive-return territory. But you have to be playing for quarters -- if you play at higher denominations, the value of the bonus is diminished. Dancer's article about how he used the Video Poker for Winners software to determine the value of the bonus is scheduled to run at LasVegasAdvisor.com on August 16. It provides good information that will help you use VPW to work out the values of similar promotions.

Meanwhile, Rounders, located at 4455 S. Buffalo, is a decent bar for low-rolling video poker players. The schedules are poor, with the 6/5 BP being the best, but the bar sends out lots of promotions through Valpak and text messages. It also has a players club that awards cash. The bartenders are friendly and the food is good (try the nachos with pork).
