Question of the Day - 06 August 2011

Q:
I remember, a few years back, that you could check into some hotels at the airport. Are there still hotels that do that and if so, which ones are they?
A:

Actually, the only resort-casino that offers a hotel check-in service at McCarran Airport is MGM Grand, along with its sister non-gaming property The Signature, which together have a joint service kiosk in the south baggage claim, near carousels 1 and 2. As far as we know, it's the only hotel in the entire nation to offer this service, which allows you to register and pick up your room keys while you're waiting for your bags and, um, from what we can ascertain, that's about it.

There is also a bellman there until 4 p.m., who will escort you and your bags, via shuttle, to your hotel. It turns out that this is a complimentary service, so it sounds like a play to avoid paying a shuttle fare (aside from the toke to your bellman). If you could have the bellman take your bags to the hotel for you, while you dive straight into the action and hit the Double Down Saloon for a bacon martini, this service might seem more worthwhile, but FAA regulations require guests to travel with their luggage to the hotel, so that scuppers that idea. We're guessing the check-in line is probably shorter at the airport, however, plus you can make restaurant and show reservations at the kiosk.

This service is available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday to Monday (according to the MGM Grand website).

Conversely, there are seven locations around town, including MGM Grand, Luxor, Venetian, Palazzo, Harrah's, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and McCarran Rental Car Center that offer the "Bags to Go" service using Airport Speed Check Advance. For a fee of $10 per bag, passengers of participating airlines* can to check their baggage hours prior to scheduled flight departure. The bags are then transported to McCarran for TSA screening and loading onto your plane, allowing you to proceed straight to the security checkpoint and gate upon arrival at the airport.

*Those airlines participating in this program include Delta, Southwest, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta.
