Question of the Day - 14 August 2011

Q:
In in a recent QoD you referred to "former Senior Editor" Deke Castleman. Is he no longer with your organization? If not, why is that?
A:

Deke Castleman was with Huntington Press for no less than 19 years, during which time he was Senior Editor to the book-publishing wing of our business, putting his inimitable touch to everything from poker books to gambling memoirs, from our strip-club guide to fiction titles. He is the author of Whale Hunt in the Desert, our book about high-roller hosts, not to mention a whole slew of Nevada travel guides, and also edited the monthly LVA newsletter.

While Deke was less involved in the website, he did pen many of the blurbs you'll find in our Restaurant section, plus he was a frequent and much appreciated contributor to Question of the Day, where his diverse range of knowledge enabled him to write with authority about Las Vegas (and Reno) history, the science of neon, real estate, the stock market, the current state of Nevada gun and marijuana laws, and where to find the best Mexican food, to name just a few topics.

Still, all good things must come to an end and, with his two sons now grown up, Deke reached the decision that he was ready for a change of scene and recently emigrated to Ecuador, a popular retirement destination, where he has started a service called Cuenca High Life, sharing his own experiences, the latest news, and insider tips, and helping other expatriates and would-be emigrés to find their feet and navigate their way around Ecuador, much as the Las Vegas Advisor does in this city. We wish him well in his new enterprise and look forward to visiting.
