Question of the Day - 19 September 2011

Q:
In reference to the recent QoD, what is the whereabouts of Norbert Jansen and is he still involved in the casino industry?
A:

Your query refers to the QoD of 9/13/2011, concerning the Boardwalk Casino, which stood on part of the site now occupied by CityCenter and was once owned by Norbert "Norm" Jansen.

As we mentioned in that answer, Jansen was also a prior owner of downtown's Pioneer Club and part-owner of the California in the mid-'60s. He died of cancer at his Las Vegas home in January, 1997, at the age of 78. He's buried in the Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

Known as a shrewd and smooth-talking behind-the-scenes guy, in his obituary in the Las Vegas Sun, Jansen's former partner in the California, Frank Schivo, described him as a "character straight from a Damon Runyon book" but also a "backburner-type player" who shied away from publicity. While Schivo's name was emblazoned above their downtown hotel, Jansen's never was and few people even knew of his involvement in the property.

Perhaps because of that trait, there's not much more we can tell you about Norbert Jansen, aside from the fact that he was a World War II veteran who hailed from Louisville, Ky. He moved to Las Vegas in 1946 and became a wheeler-dealer who was also responsible for the Holiday Casino (now Harrah's) development deal on the Strip, in addition to his role in the aforementioned properties.

Jansen was survived by his wife, who owned the gift shop in the Boardwalk until it was imploded, two daughters, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

If anyone has any further information about this enigmatic Las Vegas pioneer, please drop us a line.
