Question of the Day - 12 December 2011

Q:
I recently noticed that the lights that run down the sides of the Luxor have turned green. Do you know why?
A:

We also noticed that and had been meaning to investigate, but it slipped our mind, so thanks for the reminder.

The MGM Resorts International group has consistently been at the forefront of eco-friendly developments in Las Vegas, and in 2011 for the second year running made Newsweek's list of the Top 500 greenest companies in the U.S., coming in in the respectable #157 spot.

We had therefore assumed that the change from white to green lights was in recognition of some new initiative by the Living Green team at Luxor, which has overseen various energy-conservation, recycling, xeriscaping, and other environmentally friendly projects in recent years.

A call to the PR department, however, revealed that the lights were turned green for the Latin Grammy Awards, which took place on November 10 ... at Mandalay Bay! This left us somewhat confused on a number of levels until we received a follow-up email from PR, explaining that the event was sponsored by Heineken and also featured a green, rather than red carpet, and that the lights at this sister property were switched to green as part of the promotion. It seems that you and the current writer are the only people who've noticed, but perhaps they'll revert back now that we've pointed it out. We'll keep you posted.
