Question of the Day - 02 January 2012

Q:
What is Oscar Goodman's actual involvement with the new steakhouse in the Plaza? I'd been under the impression that the former mayor owned the joint, but I've heard rumors that isn't true at all. Say it ain't so!
A:

We regret to inform you that the rumor you heard is indeed true: Oscar Goodman doesn't have any financial stake in the new steakhouse at the Plaza to which he's loaned his name; he doesn't even have any official involvement in its management. That's not to say that Oscar's doesn't have his inimitable influence stamped all over it, however.

Located in the famous Dome room in downtown's newly renovated Plaza, a property which Goodman once infamously said he'd be happy to see imploded, the former Mayor of Las Vegas has since changed his tune and become as vocal a supporter of the new speakeasy-style restaurant as he has long been for Bombay Sapphire gin.

With a name like Oscar's Beef, Booze, and Broads, the former Mob attorney who once told a class of junior school students that his hobby was drinking gin seems the perfect ambassador for the new steakhouse. The ever-flamboyant Goodman was of course present on Dec. 19 for the grand opening of the restaurant and lounge, which features his oversized portrait on one of its walls and will later house a roomful of Goodman memorabilia.

The restaurant's subtitle apparently stems from a phrase the ex-attorney once heard during a trial and vowed some day to incorporate into a restaurant moniker. "I'm going to be here drinking in excess," Goodman said during a recent interview about the restaurant with the LV Sun, so while his involvement is unofficial, expect it to be significant.

Look out for Anthony Curtis' review of Oscar's in the January issue of the LVA newsletter, by the way.
