Question of the Day - 30 January 2012

Q:
I read that the Golden Gate has closed their deli to accommodate their expansion. While they are still serving the shrimp cocktail in their Du-par's restaurant 24/7, the price has been quietly raised to $2.99. My wife and I loved going downtown for this Top Ten deal. What have you heard?
A:

Here's what Anthony Curtis wrote in the February edition of the LVA newsletter:

"Even though we're leaving room rates at #1, the Top Ten gets a bit of a shake-up this month, bringing one great deal back and adding a first-timer. But the biggest news is what's not on the list. The Golden Gate's shrimp cocktail is gone (even though it's still available). No, the price hasn't been raised and the quality hasn't gone down. The problem is, the Deli where it's served is currently closed because of construction at the casino. The shrimp continues to be served in Du-par's, but it's a dollar more there ($2.99) and much less convenient to get. Hence, for now, the great Gate shrimp cocktail is off the [Top Ten} list. Expect it to return this summer.

And here's the feedback we received from the president of the GG, in response to a separate inquiry from a reader who questioned the caliber of the cocktail sauce under the current arrangements:

"We always have sold shrimp cocktail in our Diner for one dollar more than in the Deli. While we've closed the Deli for renovation, Du-par’s continues to sell the shrimp cocktail in the Diner for $2.99.

"As for the recipe, ours is special and we have a very strict agreement with Du-par’s to make it right."

So, those of you who've had an issue with the quality of the current cockail, be aware that the GG's management has registered your complaint and is actively looking into it, and that the price hike is only a temporary measure while renovations continue.
