Q:
The Mirage serves the best shrimp cocktail sauce in Las Vegas. Can you find out if it's made from scratch or comes premade? If so, who makes it? I'll shut up now and continue eating. Mmmmm!
A:
The good news is, we managed, through knowing the right people, to track down the cocktail sauce used in Cravings buffet at the Mirage, which we assume is the one you were referring to. It's made by Girard's, which makes a wide range of salad dressings and other condiments. The bad news is, from what we can see, it's not available via retail outlets, only to trade. Other Girard's products are available over the counter, but we haven't tracked down anyone selling the cocktail sauce. If anyone out there knows of a retail vendor, please pass on the details. Thanks!

Ha! Today's questioner responds:
"Re: My QoD on the Mirage shrimp cocktail sauce - I cheated and already knew the answer. Girard's is a licensed trademark by T. Marzetti out of Columbus, OH. The cocktail sauce is shipped in a 40,000-pound tractor trailer. With that quantity of sauce being shipped to LV, it begs the question of whether the other MGM/Mirage casinos also serve the Girard's? I couldn't purchase the sauce from Marzetti but the marketing coordinator from Girard's sent me a 2 quart bag.
"I began by asking the Mirage waitress if the sauce was purchased or handmade. She came back and told me it was a mixture of ketchup and horseradish. That's when my bullshit detector went off, so I went back into the kitchen and had a nice talk with the chef, who he showed me the 2 qt Girard bag of sauce. See if the other MGM/Mirage properties feature the Girard's sauce."
Ed: We called Food & Beverage at both MGM Grand and Bellagio, who revealed that both those buffets make their own cocktail sauce.
