Question of the Day - 03 March 2012

Q:
While on vacation I always enjoy a good cigar. Can you tell me where to find any cigar lounges on the Strip?
A:

It's been a while -- more than five years, in fact -- since we last tackled an overview of cigar lounges in this feature, and a lot has changed in the interim, although the good news is that there have been as many additions as there have been losses, either in the form of new openings, or in the discovery of hitherto unknown venues. Here are our findings:

  • André's restaurant (Monte Carlo) is known for its cognacs and whiskeys, and features a separate Cigar Lounge with classic décor (wood paneling, overstuffed armchairs, etc.) The lounge, which carries 14 different makes of cigar, features its own separate ventilation and air-filtration system, so it never gets too smoky.

  • A newcomer since we last surveyed the lay of the land is the Chandelier Bar as Cosmpolitan. While not a dedicated cigar lounge, it is cigar-friendly and there's a roaming cigar girl to tend to your needs, if you don't have a smoke of your own. Featured in Eating Las Vegas 2012, it's one of the most beautiful and unusual environments in Las Vegas in which to enjoy a cocktail and cigar.

  • The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace is home to the Casa Fuente cigar lounge and store, the first licensed store from the Arturo Fuente brand of cigars. The bar features a menu of tropical cocktails, wine, and cognac, many paired to cigars (they sell only the Fuente brand, with prices that start at under $10 and go up to $125 each), in a Cuban-influenced interior. Bar snacks are also available.

  • Bellagio has both the Petrossian Lounge and Baccarat Bar as options, both of which carry humidors.

  • Wynn and Encore don't have any cigar lounges per se, but Parasol Up/Down at the former, and Eastside Lounge at the latter, are both cigar-friendly.

If you don't mind venturing a little off the Strip, we have a few more suggestions worth checking out.

  • En Fuego is a newly refurbished venue that's taken over the former Don Yeyo Cigar Factory (328 W. Sahara Ave., two blocks west of the Strip). They roll all their own cigars, which come in 14 sizes, on site, and offer a custom labeling service, if you have a bachelor party or birthday you'd like to celebrate. They also carry some 40+ other brands of cigars, but told us that 90% of what they sell is their own label. The lounge comfortably seats 20 and is open until 6 p.m. daily (9 p.m. Fridays).

  • The Havana Cigar Company (3900 Paradise Rd.) features a big walk-in humidor and and a small but comfortable lounge area, generally populated by regulars. There's an adjacent wine store, plus a wine bar, and they often feature live music at night.

  • A new discovery for us (it's been around for years) is Pheasant Cigars (2800 W. Sahara Ave., just a couple of blocks west of En Fuego), which also features a classic lounge area with big leather sofas (Click here for a slideshow.)

    Hope this helps. Happy smoking!
