Question of the Day - 27 March 2012

Q:
The March 3, 2012 QoD dealt with cigar enjoyment on the Strip. How about downtown? I know Terry Caudill with Four Queens/Binion's is a big cigar promoter.
A:

While sidebar has closed and the lounge at the new Oscar's steakhouse at the Plaza is, surprisingly, cigar non-friendly, you do have options centered, as you suggest, around Four Queens and Binion's. Both properties are owned by Terry Caudill, a local who's a graduate of University of Nevada, Reno, previously worked as a craps dealer and keno runner, rose to the level of corporate vice-president at Circus Circus, and is the founder of the Magoo's, Loose Caboose, and Chicago Brewing Company restaurants in Las Vegas. With a parnter, he also recently purchased and reopened Skinny Duggans (4127 W. Charleston Blvd.), a long-shuttered locals joint where he's converted one area into a cigar lounge.

Talking of Chicago Brewing company, the first obvious pick for you would be Mr Caudill's perenially-popular Chicago Brewing Company and Cigar Lounge, located on the second floor of the Four Queens. It's open 24/7 and features craft brews, Chicago-style pizza, and a well-ventilated cigar bar.

Binion's offers not one, but two cigar-friendly options. Vato Cigars specializes in the production of premium "boutique" hand-rolled cigars, made in small batches, and is open until 2 a.m. daily. It's a small venue, but includes a lounge, in addition to the retail area, where selections start at $5 and go up to $50.

Meanwhile, Benny's Bullpen Sports Bar and Cigar Lounge, opposite Vato, is just what the name suggests and offers a good selection of cigars, plus food and several hand-crafted draft beers. There's a coupon for 25% off your bill in the 2012 Las Vegas Advisor Member Rewards Book. It's open till 1 a.m. daily.

Those are the few places that spring to mind as far as enjoying a cigar downtown is concerned, but if you're in the market for buying some smokes, check out the Las Vegas Cuban Cigar Factory. Located at 109 N. Fourth St., this is probably the closest you’ll get to smoking a Cuban without leaving the country or paying dearly for pre-embargo specimens. Owner Nelson Ventura has been rolling cigars for 35 years, so he knows what he's doing.
