Question of the Day - 27 May 2012

Q:
You guys are always updating road closures in and around the Las Vegas area. It made me wonder how many of your members are locals or within a 4-hour drive of the area? Just curious.
A:

That's an interesting question, but we have to clarify a couple of things before answering.

While lasvegasadvisor.com currently receives approximately 200,000 unique visitors per month, only some 17,000 people are currently Las Vegas Advisor members, entitled to all the exclusive benefits that come with a subscription.

Of those members, the last time we checked the geographic breakdown consisted of: approximately 8% Nevadans (of those, we're not sure off the top of our head how many are local to Vegas, and how many reside further afield); almost 10% were based in California; Illinois yielded the next-biggest group, at a little under 8%. Canadians account for about 2% of our members, with others hailing from the U.K., Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Austria, Japan, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Turkey, Mexico, Taiwan, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Guam, New Zealand, France, Sweden, Finland, Brazil, Philippines, and the Armed Forces.

In terms of website readership, people are geographically even more diverse, spanning India to Romania, South Africa to Peru. Still, 90% are U.S.-based, with 16.5% of website visitors being California-based, and 9.5% Nevadan. Next comes Texas (7%), followed by Illinois (6%), and New York (5.5%).

So, there's a demographic overview of our members and non-members. However, although only a fraction of our members or readers are local Las Vegans (a fact that continues to baffle us), we also know from a previous Reader Poll we conducted that almost 50% of our readers either drive their own car or use a rental vehicle when in town. Hence, we know that a significant number of Today's News readers will be driving here on any given day, so we do our best to keep them abreast of any serious traffic snarl-up we hear about -- an all-too-common occurrence, unfortunately, as all you drivers out there will know from experience.
