Question of the Day - 20 June 2012

Q:
Guess this is maybe more something you might want to do a poll on first to see if there's interest, but I'm wondering if you've ever considered an LVA app for smartphones? I personally would pay for it. It would make it easier to stay up with news, bonus points, online coupons, etc. while in town. Thanks for the consideration.
A:

The short answer is, yes, we've considered it, and we've looked into developing more than one. We ran a Reader Poll on this very topic back in October 2010 and, with 9,500 votes, we already know there's interest!

Your question is also timely, since we've recently embarked on a complete redesign and recoding of our entire online presence, starting with the main LasVegasAdvisor.com website, and we're canvassing our readers and members for input about various aspects, including how we can make things more user-friendly.

As far as apps are concerned, having reviewed the results of the poll we ran, plus other feedback we've received in the interim and our own conversations with various developers, we've reached a few conclusions.

Primarily, when people say they'd like an "app" for Las Vegas Advisor, it seems that what many mean is that they'd like a mobile-friendly version of LasVegasAdvisor.com, which would make it easier to access daily features like Question of the Day, a specific buffet listing, or a show review. We realize that our current site has not been optimized in this capacity and having a really mobile-friendly version is part of the current redevelopment plan.

When it comes to apps, our feeling is that there is scope for developing some useful applications that enhance some of our exisiting products, including gambling strategies, Vegas guidebooks, or last-minute room or show offers, or for easily downloading/redeeming online deals at couponsinvegas.com, for example. We can certainly see the value of a geo-targeted app that would inform our members anytime they were in the vicinity of a venue that had a current deal for LVA members, so these types of ideas are certainly open to consideration, and we'll be bearing them in mind as the main site rebuild moves forward. In the meantime, we always welcome your feedback and ideas, so feel free to use the Question of the Day email submission link to keep 'em coming.

While we're on the subject, if you hadn't already heard, we're currently running a contest through the end of this week in search of your coolest Vegas images, to incorporate into our new site design. Winners will not only have the chance to have their photo ogled by some half-million eyeballs every month; you'll also get a free subscription to LVA, plus whatever other goodies we feel like throwing in. So, don't delay -- submit your photo today! There are no tight perameters, but images need to say "Vegas," so cityscapes of the Strip or downtown, showgirls, fireworks ... you get the idea. Again, use [email protected] and try to send low res files (in focus!), so they don't get spammed. Good luck everyone, and thanks!
