Question of the Day - 24 June 2012

Q:
I see that Deafnation is coming to Las Vegas again in July. While I do know Sign Language and I've heard about this event before, I don't know how it started or what it does. Can you find out? Thanks much.
A:

DeafNation is an organization founded in 2003 by brothers Joel and Jed Barish, who were both born deaf, with a view to providing news coverage, social networking, and special events for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community both in the U.S. and around the world.

The DeafNation Expo is an annual touring trade show for, by, and about deaf people, featuring some 10 to 15 stops nationally, including this July 31 to Aug. 1 at Mandalay Bay. Event registration is free and 30,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing attendees from all over the world are anticipated to experience the week of exhibitions, workshops, entertainment, sporting activities, presentations, and networking opportunities.

Prior to the expo kicking off, in conjunction with the DeafNation expo, Palazzo will be hosting a series of events for the Deaf Poker Tour, from Friday July 27 through Sunday, July 29, with buy-ins starting at $120. Visit the NationalDeafPokerTour website for more information and schedules.
