The Lady Luck has perhaps been the subject of more QoDs submitted over the years than any other topic, with the possible exception of July 4/New Year's fireworks.
It was back in 2006 that the aged but friendly downtown hotel-casino closed its doors, much to the dismay of many visitors, and nothing then happened for years, aside from then Mayor Oscar Goodman getting increasingly upset at having an eyesore in the middle of his beloved downtown area, which has been undergoing an ongoing process of upgrades and new developments.
Finally, in February 2011, the derelict building was purchased from its previous owners by Fifth Street Gaming, which also owns the Gold Spike and operates numerous other gaming and food and beverage businesses around town, including Triple George and the Mob Bar, which are fellow members of the group's "Downtown3rd" four-block redevelopment project, which also features the eponymous Friday farmers market.
Fifth Street is investing in excess of $100 million into the revitalization of the Lady Luck, which first debuted in 1964 and is due to open in its new incarnation as the Downtown Grand Casino & Hotel in the fall of 2013. According to the official website, the new property will feature a 35,000-square-foot casino, eight bars and lounges, 11 restaurants, and 650 guest rooms.
