Question of the Day - 28 August 2012

Q:
A couple weeks ago there were tremendous winds in Laughlin. Apparently, a window in a Riverside hotel bar blew in, injuring several people. This would seem to be a big story, but I can't find any information on it.
A:

It was about 6 p.m. August 9 when severe winds of up to 60 mph hit Bullhead City, causing 500 people to be evacuated from a party in Community Park, and Laughlin, where the storm did indeed blow out a large window at the Riverside Resort and Casino, as well as downing power lines.

No serious injuries were sustained at the casino, but eight people did suffer minor cuts from flying glass, one of whom was briefly hospitalized. The other seven were treated at the scene. According to Bullhead City spokesman Steve Johnson, "This was as strong a blast of wind that I've ever seen." It apparently appeared without warning and disappeared within 15 minutes, after leaving its mark.

No injuries were reported at the park, either, where revelers were enjoying the first evening of a 2-night "Cannonball" pre-party leading up to the Colorado River regatta on Saturday. Although severe winds blew over tents and portable toilets, and downed tree limbs, portable lights, and speakers during the event, organizers reported that the park was safely evacuated within ten minutes.
