Question of the Day - 09 October 2012

Q:
I heard that somewhere on the Strip a huge screen or display will be built -- I mean a very large screen the size of a football field. Is there any truth to this?
A:

Before we get to the answer of this question, which was originally scheduled to run Oct. 4, we'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to all our loyal readers for the absence of QoD in the interim. As you may have read in Today's News, or on the message boards, we experienced a catastrophic meltdown last week -- something of a perfect storm in the IT department -- and it has taken several days to first isolate the problem(s) and then arrive at the solution. We hope sincerely that the issues have all now been addressed and that normal service can resume. The rebuild of this site continues and is nearing completion, and hopefully will mean that all these problems will all be forever behind us. In the meantime, here's the answer to that question we attempted to deliver last week.

Yes, it's no lie, and not only will it be built -- it already has been!

The digital screen atop the Harmon Corner retail and entertainment complex, which debuted earlier this summer across the Boulevard from CityCenter, is reportedly the largest video billboard in the world. Measuring 60 feet high by 308 feet wide, the full-motion screen is longer than a football field and approximately 27 times the size of a typical freeway billboard. For the geeks among you, it features 12mm pitch as well as full-motion LED and cost $10 million.

If you can't quite picture it, basically it's like a giant hi def flat-screen TV, except it's not flat, because it wraps around the triangular building in a rather cool way. It' capable of displaying live-feed video and three-dimensional images, as well as paid advertising and video art and, in spite of striking fear and loathing into the hearts of casino execs up and down the Strip when the concept was first proposed -- when asked for a comment, Caesars Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Communications and Government Relations (now there's an interesting title) Jan Jones responded: "We hate it" -- it's actually beyond cool and not tacky at all. (In fairness to Ms Jones, in its earliest proposed incarnations, the screen was basically just going to be ginormous Walgreens advertisement, rather than the multi-media extravaganza we have today, sohooray for that.)
