Question of the Day - 13 October 2012

Q:
I watched Olate Dogs work their way to the top spot on "America’s Got Talent." The father has been performing with his dogs for 40+ years. Some of his dogs are rescues and he donates some of his receipts to shelters. Back in the ’90s, I saw a dog act at Excalibur. Some of the dogs were rescues and a portion of each day’s ticket sales were donated to shelters. Could this have been Olate Dogs?
A:

We confess that we had to look this one up, and it wasn't easy to find much, but we can confirm that the act you saw at Excalibur was not Olate Dogs, the first non-singing act to date to bag the top spot on "Talent".

The show to which you're referring was, we believe, called JUMP! The Ultimate Dog Show, which featured the so-called "Dog Man of Las Vegas" Lou Mack McCammon and his frisbee-catching, hand-standing, back-flipping, and dock-diving canines in a matinee performance that ran in the Excalibur showroom for a couple of years, back in the mists of time.

We could find very little additional information about this show or precisely when it performed, aside from some anecdotal tidbits, including the fact that some years ago Strip headliner and animal-lover Rita Rudner adopted a former high-jumping cast member of JUMP! called Bonkers, after he was hit by car and couldn’t perform in the show anymore.

From what we could glean from the Vegas-based Mack's Cool Dog Productions website, the owner has been in the entertainment industry for more than 20 years as both a trainer and show producer, and has taken JUMP! The Ultimate Dog Show all over the U.S., with Mack and his canine cast also having piled up an impressive international resume, including performances in Japan and the Middle East.

These days, meanwhile, if you want to check out a performing-pet show in Las Vegas, look no further than Gregory Popovich's Comedy Pet Theater, a long-running family favorite that features a cast of both dogs and cats, all of which have been rescued from shelters.
