Question of the Day - 30 October 2012

Q:
A short time ago you opened up the archives in order to have you readers submit any QoDs that were missing. How did this go? Did you recover a lot of the lost files???
A:

Time flies... It was actually in August 2011 that we issued the appeal to help repair answers in the Question of the Day archives damaged by a SQL attack on our server, which happened to coincide with an until-then-undetected problem with our backup system. The original incident actually took place back in 2008 and wiped out portions of a significant percentage of QoDs stretching back to May, 2005.

We received a terrific response at the time, with some QoD stalwarts submitting tens or even hundreds of files they had saved. Unfortunately, a few epic answers we have yet to track down and they will either have to be researched and rewritten from scratch, jettisoned altogether, or simply left in their damaged state (the attack "ate" characters from the bottom up, truncating some answers by pages) until such time as we have the (wo)man hours to fix 'em.

Even with all the help we received, fixing the archive has been a slow and laborious process due to the pressures of more immediate concerns and projects. If you sent in one or more answers to help us, please don't take the seeming inertia at our end as a sign that we lost interest or didn't appreciate your assistance. We have begun the fixing process and hope to accelerate it once the new edition of Eating Las Vegas is back from the printer and our new fiction imprint -- Vegas Lit -- has been launched. Oh, yes, and there's the 2013 Member Rewards Book to negotiate and compile, too, not to mention the rebuild of our website. Sometimes, there simply aren't enough hours in the day.

On the subject of the website rebuild and launch, the project is continuing apace, although inevitably it turned out to be far more complicated than the team working on it had bargained for. That's not least because our current online presence is anything but off-the-shelf and comprises a mish-mash of sites and servers that have been finagled into working with each other, when that's really not as it was intended. Moving forward, we should be in a much stabler, streamlined, and more robust and secure environment before the end of the year, if the geek gods be with us, and we hope to mark the launch by unleashing a restored (to the best of our ability) and upgraded Question of the Day archive that we will finally throw open to all.

Thanks for your interest, and stay tuned!
