Question of the Day - 08 February 2013

Q:
Has the reality show Vegas Stripped helped or hurt the Southpoint? They appear on the show at times to be bumbling fools who don't know how to run an event or hotel (for example putting a newbie in charge of the Indian Rodeo) or have the issues shown been over dramatized for the show and the casino/hotel actually runs like a well-oiled machine?
A:

From what we've read, primarily John Katsilometes' Kats Report blog in the Las Vegas Sun, that depends a lot on who you ask.

According to Tom Mikovits, long-time Director of Marketing at South Point, who was responsible for negotiating the deal with reality-show makers Leftfield Productions, the same company behind History Channel’s hit show "Pawn Stars," the series boosted business and he'd like to see it return.

On the other hand, after giving the first two episodes he watched an encouraging 8/10 vote of confidence, South Point owner Michael Gaughan consistently avoided appearing in the show himself, quickly grew disenchanted with the depiction of his staff and has no intention of inviting the producers back for a second season. "I hope they cancel it. I didn’t like how we came across. That’s why I wasn’t in it," Gaughan said in an interview with the Sun. So it sounds like those six half-hour episodes of "Vegas Stripped," which taped from October to December 2011 and included behind-the-scenes coverage of a food-truck event, the Fetish & Fantasy Ball (now returning to Hard Rock), a celebrity poker tournament, and the World Series of Team Roping, among other things, are all you're gonna get.

In contrast, Gaughan, who is very protective of Las Vegas' image and who generally tends to shun any personal media attention, did agree to appear in a couple of episodes of "The Linemakers" show, about professional sports handicappers, which debuted on Discovery's Velocity channel and now airs online (see QoD 11/10/12). "When I see the camera, I usually go the other way," Gaughan told the Sun. However, he went on to explain, "I did appear a couple of times on 'Linemakers' because I am comfortable with sports betting."
