Question of the Day - 18 September 2013

Q:
What happened to the welcome to Las Vegas webcam?
A:

That is a good question, but one to which we've been unable to find an answer to date.

We first wrote about -- and in fact first heard about -- the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign EarthCam when we answered a QoD back in April of this year. It's a great streaming webcam that offers some classic photo ops by the iconic landmark, plus there's a "Hall of Fame" archive featuring the best user-uploaded webcam moments.

Or rather it was a great streaming webcam up until September 10, when for reasons unexplained it went offline. We have contacted the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to see if they could shed any light, but they were unable to help and directed us to YESCO, owners of the sign itself. We spoke to two helpful but bemused employees there who didn't even know there was a webcam, and had no knowledge of its demise. We also sent an email to EarthCam, but as of this writing it remains unacknowledged.

The "Welcome" webcam is no longer included on the "Vegas" page, where you can still find EarthCams located at Treasure Island, the Bellagio Conservatory, and the Elvis Wedding Chapel, but there's no explanation as to where the other one has disappeared to. It also hasn't been featured any time recently on the EarthCam Facebook page, which highlights the best of their streaming webcams from around the world.

All we can do is keep checking the page and hope that it comes back, or at least that someone at EarthCam responds to our inquiry. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, here's the link to our Vegas webcams feature in the LVA Vegas Visitor Guide section, where you can find descriptions of and links to all the operational webcams and related resources around town that we're aware of.
