Question of the Day - 27 September 2013

Q:
On our recent visit (9/7-9/14) we discovered that Station Casinos has a Senior Special for their buffet on Wednesdays. Also, the Silverton has a Senior Special for the buffet on Mondays. When you acquire the 2014 coupons, could you find out what Senior Special each casino offers, and on what day of the week?
A:

This is a tricky one, since some promos (for example, at Stations properties) are liable to change from month to month, so what holds true in September may not in October. Hence, we strongly urge you to contact the buffet at your casino of choice, and/or the players club, before making a special trip somewhere. Also, "senior" means 55+, unless otherwise indicated.

Here's what we gleaned when we posed the question during our buffet call-around for the October issue of the LVA newsletter:

  • Senior (50+) Wednesdays at Station Casinos (includes all properties, including Fiestas and Wildfires, where applicable facilities exist): Half-point dining at all restaurants, including buffets, plus $4 matinee movie tickets before 6 p.m.; $3,000 free slot tournaments at every casino (10 a.m.-7 p.m.), and half-point bowling and bingo. Must present Boarding Pass and valid ID. Must visit the Rewards Center for the bingo and bowling discounts.

  • Boyd Casinos (excludes downtown properties): "Young at Heart Tuesdays" (50+): Half-off or two-for-one at the buffet when 10 points are played, plus twofer bingo blue pack; $2,500 cash drawing; and a seniors Kiosk game (see players club for details on the latter two promos).

  • Arizona Charlies Boulder and Decatur: Seniors receive 10 percent off at buffet (on top of regular players club discount)

  • Cannery: Seniors receive 50% off at the buffet on Mondays.

  • Hacienda: Seniors receive $2 off all meals on Thursdays.

  • M Resort: Receive 1/2 off breakfast or lunch when paying with points.

  • Palms: Get half-off at Bistro Buffet on Thursdays with your players card if you're 50+.

  • Railroad Pass: Buffet offers 2-for-1 deal for seniors on Mondays.

  • Rampart: Those 50+ receive $3 off with players card.

  • Silverton: On "Senior Mondays" receive $5 off lunch and $7 off dinner.

  • Todai: The sushi buffet in Miracle Mile Shops offers $5 off lunch and 20% off dinner for local seniors with I.D.

Those are the only senior buffet-specific special offers we know of, but there are lots of other discounts available around town, including discounts on rooms at a number of properties, including some Strip resorts (may have to present an AARP card). For details on these and other offers, visit seniordiscountslasvegas.com. Also, check out a blog entry from last year at Jean Scott's Frugal Vegas, which lists myriad non-casino discounts for seniors. The same cautionary note applies as at the beginning of this answer: Call to check before counting on a senior saving, as promos change like the wind.
