Question of the Day - 07 October 2013

Q:
MGM just launched a Winter Getaway promo that runs through February. Under the "special events" section, it lists the Oasis Pool at Luxor as open daily. I thought this pool originally closed for the winter. Will this be open and are more resorts moving to keeping pool(s) open all winter?
A:

No, you are correct and nothing has changed: The Oasis Pool at Luxor is seasonal and this year is scheduled to close November 3, reopening March 4. While Luxor's pool is closed, guests are able to use the pool at neighboring Excalibur, which is open year-round and was completely remodeled a couple of years back, so it's actually pretty nice. Several hotels operate a similar policy: For example, when Bally's pool is closed for the winter months, guests can use the pool at sister property Paris next door, while guests of downtown's Fremont, which has no pool, have access to the pool at the California.

Back when it was still Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon, guests at this pool-less property were offered access to the famous Flamingo Lagoon Pool complex, but when it reopens as Gansevoort next year, this center-Strip property will have its own rooftop pool. It will be the only hotel on the Strip* to offer such an amenity to regular guests, although currently we're not sure if this will be part of Drai's and open only to club guests, or if it's the regular pool -- we think the latter but, following recent news snippets, are slightly confused as to whether Drai's will operate in the basement, as it formerly did, or on the roof, or both. We'll keep you posted as things become clearer.

As far as the year-round concept goes, yes, it's a trend that can be considered positive fallout from the new "daylife" concept that reared its head a few years back. As the pool-party season erupted, there was an incentive to keep the party going outside of the traditional window of Memorial Day through Labor Day (Cosmopolitan actually started recruiting pool staff this year while its skating rink was still operational!), and pools in general have pushed the envelope when it comes to their availability. Most resorts, in fact, offer a year-round heated-pool option, although hours tend to be truncated out of season, since it doesn't make economic sense to pay the requisite staff to heat or man a pool with only a handful of hardy guests in attendance.

*Hakkasan at MGM Grand was originally slated to include a rooftop-pool complex, but that idea evidently got ditched somewhere down the line.
