Question of the Day - 17 November 2013

Q:
I was recently at the Forum Shops and noticed the moving statue show was still not working. A sign nearby stated the statues were resting but it seems to me they have been comatose for some time. I cannot remember the last time they were working. When will they ever wake up again?
A:

Yes, they will. You might say they’re in a ‘robotically induced coma.’

According to Forum Shops spokeswoman Michelle Loosbrock, "In a nutshell, we’re getting ready to unveil an updated version of The Atlantis Show." Without divulging specifics, Loosbrock said the new-look Atlantean statuary would feature "enhanced visual and special effects, superior sound, updated costumes and advanced animatronics." She promises a show of "epic proportions," to be rolled out in late November 2013. The specific date has not been disclosed.

According to the official announcement, The Atlantis Show now "incorporates video elements played out on … 14 video LED screens that can combine to depict one continuous image. When working in unison, the picture is a massive 11 by 266 feet, making it one of the widest screens in Las Vegas and among the largest worldwide." An ultraviolet-reactive element added to the tableau will provide "a magical light-reflective quality to the fountain façade."

New costumes and armor were commissioned from Hollywood’s Sword & Stone firm, whose feature-film credits include Thor and Pirates of the Caribbean. Forty audio speakers have also been added, to make the sound effect of waves physically palpable, not just audible. Forum Shops General Manager Mark Bell is quoted as saying, "No other indoor venue in Las Vegas has the combined special effects that are incorporated in the new Atlantis Show."

The 11-minute extravaganza is a tale of sibling rivalry, enacted by – among others – nine-foot-tall representations of Atlas and his children, Alia and Gadrius. Located next to the Atlantis Aquarium, the renewed Atlantis Show will play hourly, starting at 11 a.m.
