Question of the Day - 28 November 2013

Q:
While staying downtown recently, I stumbled across the Container Park. Is this stores? Apartments? A play area for kids??? Could not figure out what this area is while standing right next to it! I bet you know what it is…
A:

It was back at the end of March that we first got wind of another development plan slated for downtown, this time for a complex called the "Container Park" which, according to the plans, was to be a collection of around 30 restaurants, bars, and retail outlets located at Fremont and Seventh Streets and housed in "prefabricated cubes" -- actually re-purposed shipping containers, with completion at this point slated for October. (Evidently, from subsequent reading, we were late to learn about this whole project, which had originally been penciled for a spring 2013 launch.)

We didn't think much more about the project until May, when we received a query from a reader, pleading for us to shed some light because: "The construction between 7th and 8th on Fremont is driving me crazy with wonder. There is a small domed round building and I'm curious as to what it will be."

By this point, more was known about the plan, which was also set to include a playground, a pet area, a stage -- oh, and a 40-foot mechanical praying mantis that "occasionally shoots out 12-foot flames" from its antennae. Naturally. (We confess we're still not sure what the "Catalyst Dome" is or does.) The Park was being built by local construction firm Breslin Brothers, whose website was not too forthcoming with data in word form, but did contain lots of images -- both artists renditions, and some work-in-progress shots.

Finally, after several more slight hiccups in the delivery schedule, the Container Park opened on November 25, or at least most of it did. Some tenants, like a candy store called the Sweet Spot, aren't quite ready, but you can get a good idea of the lineup from Eater Vegas. According to the few words posted on the official website, opening hours are as follows:

Monday-Thursday

Public Areas 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Retail 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Food & Beverage 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday

Public Areas 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Retail 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Food & Beverage 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

So, now you know!
