Question of the Day - 11 February 2014

Q:
I enjoy my view of the Bellagio fountains from my room at Paris, but the booming gunshot like sounds coming from there must tick off more than just this guest. Have nearby hotels complained about the noise that the fountains cause?
A:

"Not that I’ve ever heard," replies MGM spokesman Alan Feldman, referring to the detonation from Bellagio’s scores of fountain nozzles, propelling H2O skyward. "We have specific rules about not running loud shows after midnight. We also find that many of the properties across the street use the Fountains to their benefit: Paris markets their views [of the fountains]."

Twelve hundred in number, the nozzles cover eight acres and come in four types: rotating Oarsmen, vertical Shooter, Super Shooters – whose blasts can send water 240 feet into the air – and Extreme Shooters. Added in a 2005 makeover, these can propel water 460 feet into the air. We’re sorry that the sound of these supercharged water cannons disturbs your stay but we’re glad you enjoy the spectacle.

Here's a reminder of the fountains in all their glory, with the added option of muting or quieting the sound for the benefit of the more easily alarmed or sensitive hearers among our readers.
