Question of the Day - 13 June 2014

Q:
I am coming to Vegas on June 15, with my wife and daughter. Are there any Father’s Day specials to take advantage of?
A:

Many of the better restaurants and bars in casinos claim to "celebrate" Father’s Day, though they usually just use it as an excuse to topically advertise their regular fare, such as buffets, brunches, lunches, and drinks at their regular prices. For example, Rhumbar at the Mirage "salutes dads with two of their favorite things, cocktails and cigars" ($20). Nothing particularly "special" about that.

Some do put on "specials," however, by designing dinners for dads. For example, La Cave Wine and Food Hideaway at the Wynn is offering "an escape for dads to celebrate the manliest holiday of the year" with a prix-fixe steak dinner ($55). Trevi in the Forum Shops at Caesars is serving a 14-ounce ribeye dinner ($46) "designed specially to honor the family’s patriarchs."

The buffets, too, are catering to dads. M Resort’s Studio B is representative: prime rib and crab legs – "two of Dad’s favorite dishes" – are featured, along with complimentary beer and wine, though that’s standard at the Studio B (lunch and dinner $39.99/adults and $26.99/children).

You can find these easily enough by googling "Father’s Day Las Vegas 2014" and running down the lists, looking for restaurants and/or cuisines that interest or attract you.

Most of the spas around town design "packages for dads," though again, there’s usually nothing special about the treatments or prices. Spa Mio, also at M Resort, is an exception; its Just For Men package ($140) and Rescue Mio Man package ($150), "especially designed for the well-deserving dad," are discounted. Likewise, barber services in June (Wednesday through Saturday) are 30%.

Also, a number of things to do are aimed at locals, such as the free-for-fathers deal at the three Las Vegas city municipal pools when accompanied by a child, and family events at a number of the parks around the metro area.

But here are some true specials, with offers just for dads and just for the day.

Buy one regular-priced ticket and Dad gets to ride free on the new High Roller observation wheel at The LINQ.

Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is giving away a free Waborita margarita to all dads who dine at the restaurant.

PBR Rock Bar & Grill, 3667 S. Las Vegas Boulevard, in front of Planet Hollywood, is offering a complimentary 22-ounce Pabst Blue Ribbon draft with an order of a half-rack of ribs or brisket; in addition, there’ll be free bull rides for all fathers and grandfathers on Sunday, and children eat for free with the purchase of an adult entrée.

Bier Garten at the Plaza is offering a 2-for-1 beer on Father’s Day from among the two-dozen craft beers on tap.

Madame Tussauds wax museum at the Venetian is giving out free tickets for dads on Father’s Day; mention "Dads Go Free" at the box office when purchasing a regular-priced ticket for the freebie.

"Bodies: The Exhibition" at Luxor has a similar deal: buy-one-get-one-free admission on Father’s Day.

Likewise, "CSI: The Experience" at MGM Grand has complimentary tickets are available with the purchase of a full-price ticket; mention the "Father’s Day Special."

Rockhouse bar/nightclub at the Venetian is handing out a free shot to dads on Father’s Day, as well as $5 cocktails and two-for-one beers.

And the most creative promotion we saw is at Krispy Kreme: trading dads a dozen Original Glazed donuts for a "gently used ugly tie from his collection" (now through Sunday the 15th).

Finally, these aren't necessarily things you’ll want to do with a wife and daughter in tow, but many of the strip clubs in town put on special deals for dads. A good example is Crazy Horse III, 3525 W. Russell Road, hosting a "Who’s Your Daddy" party on Sunday, with a prize of $500 in "Diamond Bucks" to the dude who orders the most bottles. Or, check out the party at Sapphire Dayclub -- the only strip club pool in Las Vegas -- where they're threatening to throw the "craziest Father's Day weekend ever," with a two-day party hosted by Dennis Rodman.
