Question of the Day - 15 June 2014

Q:
I’m relatively new to Las Vegas and your website and I’d like to get a look at some of your gambling books. Is there a place I can go on your website or elsewhere online where I can see all your books and get a sample of what’s inside them? Also, how many books have you published?
A:

It’s hard to say exactly how many books we’ve published; we don’t have a definitive list. A number of our books and products were one-offs that came and went. Others, such as obsolete guidebooks, went out of print over the years and disappeared when the final remainder copies sold out. We began publishing books in 1992, 22 years ago, and we estimate we’ve since published around 100 books (4-5 per year). Our current trade catalog, which we send to bookstores and distributors, contains 79 titles that are still available.

You can go to a number of different places to get a look at (nearly) all our books. You can, of course, visit Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com and type in search term "Huntington Press" (include the quotation marks to keep the search specific), and all the editions of all our books will line up right in a row. You can also go to Kindle and Nook Books and type in the same search term to see which of our titles have been released as e-books (which is the majority).

Some of the books in the big online stores feature the "Look Inside" function, which offers a limited preview of the content, but the better place to go is to ShopLVA.com, which is e-commerce division of Huntington Press and LasVegasAdvisor.com (there's a link at the far left of the top menu bar). Almost all the books we’ve published in the past 10 years or so have a link from their individual landing pages on ShopLVA to a pdf file with the Table of Contents and an excerpt to give you a taste.

For example, the profile page for our latest title, The Moneymaker Effect, features the T of C, the seven-page introduction (six pages of which is a history of the World Series of Poker, currently underway just across from our offices) and, in its 14-page entirety, Chapter 3 (which includes a two-page intro to the online-poker scene in 2003 and a two-page biography of Chris Moneymaker. In addition, it features interviews with nine people talking about true stories, like how Chris won his seat in the Main Event in an online satellite, showed up in Las Vegas, and tried to sell it for a few thousand. Or how an ESPN gofer picked the unknown Moneymaker to eventually win the Main Event before it even began).

All told, the excerpt we provide in this instance is around 10% of the book’s text -- free for the clicking. Simply because our bookstore is online doesn't mean customers aren't able and welcome to come in and browse, just as you would in a brick-and-mortar store (you can do that too, at our offices, during regular business hours). You'll find The Moneymaker Effect and the link to its excerpt in our Poker section, which features some great stories for anyone who loves the gambling world and the colorful characters it tends to attract, in addition to expert strategies for players of all levels.
