Question of the Day - 12 July 2014

Q:
Hopefully this is an easy one! I was just driving from San Diego to Las Vegas, and noticed that one of the gas stations in Primm now sells Powerball tickets. I thought Powerball wasn't allowed in Nevada because of the casino gambling?
A:

Thanks! QoD appreciates an easy one every now and then, especially on the weekend. Plus, you are also correct in your thinking: Lotteries are not permitted in Nevada, but Primm Valley Lotto Store, located 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas, is just over the California state line.

In light of that state's April 2013 entry into the multi-state Powerball Lottery, owners Affinity Gaming, invested $200,000 in a makeover of the store, which is regularly ranked as the #1 or #2 location in the state for lottery-ticket sales, according to the California Lottery Commission, thanks in the most part to patronage from neighboring Nevadans. The upgrade included the addition of four new lottery service stations to the seven existing terminals, plus two self-service kiosks, and additional scratch-off ticket vending machines.

While the location has yet to see a major winner, last May it came close when a ticket was sold there that was just shy of scoring a $360-million Powerball jackpot: It matched all five regular numbers but, alas, missed the crucial Powerball digits in that Wednesday’s drawing. Still, the ticket -- one of six such runners-up sold in California for that week's drawing -- amounted to a pretty nice $256,317 consolation prize.
