Talk about stumping the Advisor. Anthony Curtis has gambling experience in just about every game, but horse-race betting ranks somewhere between pai gow tiles and Flip It in the hierarchy of his gambling expertise, and this wasn’t an answer that he had readily at hand.
Luckily, A.C. has some pretty stout contacts and he called on our primary race-betting go-to guy, Barry Meadow. Barry responds:
"These bets were available before all the books turned pari-mutuel.
"H/Q = House Quinella, which was computed by the win price X half the place price.
"H/EX = House Exacta, which was computed by the win price X the place price.
"H/TRI = House Trifecta, which was computed by the win price X the place price X the show price.
"A few remaining books might offer one or more of these bets on some tracks, but I haven’t seen them for quite a while."
So there you have it (and we learned something, too). Barry, by the way, is the author of what remains one of the best and most enduring race-betting books ever, Money Secrets at the Racetrack, which can still be purchased from Amazon and other bookstores. He’s also the author of our book Blackjack Autumn, which Anthony rates as one of the two most entertaining blackjack books ever published (along with Max Rubin’s Comp City). Blackjack Autumn is scheduled to be featured in an upcoming "Sample Sundays" QoD (but not tomorrow's).
