Question of the Day - 26 October 2014

Q:
What is the progress of the new "Park" on the Strip?
A:

According to MGM Resorts International’s Don Thrasher, president of the project, it’s 50% done. Right now what’d you see is mostly earth-moving equipment and piles of dirt. "We’re in the primary-utility phase," explains Thrasher, installing all the necessary subterranean utilities and other infrastructure. Next comes the "core-and-shell phase," in which MGM will build the exteriors for the eateries and retailers who will line The Park. The fleshing out of the interiors will be left to the tenants themselves, doing "what is unique to them." As for the landscaping of the park, its most important feature, Thrasher projects completion by autumn of 2015.

As for the 20,000-seat MGM-AEG Arena, that won’t be finished until 2016. Already its elevator shafts have arisen. As for other work on the site, Thrasher says it is much like the rest of the park: "building out the underground infrastructure that’s needed – the sewer, water, electrical [utilities] that has to come into the building." So, The Park is a long way from completion but, if watching construction is your thing, it promises months and months of spectator sport: While until the structures rise a little higher, the activity is obscured behind chain-link fencing fitted out with banners proclaiming its 2016 arrival, interested readers can bag a birds-eye view courtesy of the site's construction cam, one of the many Las Vegas webcams we list in the appropriate section of our Vegas Visitor Guide section (where you can find all manner of other interesting bits and pieces we'd wager you didn't know about).
