Question of the Day - 13 November 2014

Q:
I just had a wonderful trip to Vegas and I noticed the neon writing on the top side of "The Mirage" hotel and the writing on the top side of the "Wynn" appear to be penned by the same hand. Is that correct and if so, do you know who's handwriting the neon signs were modeled after? Thanks!
A:

How very observant of you! We can't answer this definitively in all aspects, but we do know that the "Wynn" sign atop the resort is the signature of the man himself (albeit a cleaned-up or well-practiced/polished version of same -- see photo comparison below). When it comes to the follow-up property, we believe that "Encore" also is in Steve's writing--aside from the opening letter "E", that is...

Infuriatingly, we cannot find why/when/where we read/wrote about it, but we're almost certain that the "E" of "Encore" is actually in Elaine Wynn's writing, although the couple separated less than a year after its debut. We'll keep digging in an effort to locate the source of this factoid. This "sequel" property's name garnered much attention at the time, thanks to its very existence seemingly contradicting the presumed definitive finality indicated by that punctuating period after the Wynn resort name (see below). That's all anyone seemed to be interested in the time, when it came to the moniker and its execution.

The main signage atop the Mirage is in caps and looks to be in a commercial (or bespoke) font, as opposed to being anyone's personal scrawl. We took a good look at the Mirage logo, however, and this would indeed appear, at first sight, to be in a similar script as that of the "Wynn" sign. It would make a lot of sense, since the Mirage was so personal to Steve Wynn and his penmanship, evidently, is pretty elegant and legible. However, while any direct comparison between the three property logos is rendered difficult due to the lack of common characters, and while we're not professing even remotely to be handwriting experts (or even graphology amateurs, for that matter), now that you've drawn our attention to this matter, we do have some observations:

  • The "n"s in Wynn look to be identical to the one in Encore.
  • Note the very different treatment of the letter "r" in Mirage and Encore.
  • The lower-case "e"s in Mirage and Encore don't look as if they were written by the same person.
  • The "y" in "Wynn." does not appear to have been written by the same person who wrote the "g" in Mirage.

We have a call out to MRI PR to see if they can shed any additional light on this whole matter; we didn't hear back in time for this answer, but if/when we do we'll post an "Update" or a follow-up QoD. Curious minds now need to know!
