Question of the Day - 09 January 2015

Q:
When I used to come to Vegas with my family in the 1950s. I remember how strict it was that children under 21 years were not allowed in the casino area. There were uniformed guards at all entrances, ready to tell you to leave. Today there is very little evidence of security. I see small children in the casino areas all the time. What gives?
A:

What can we say? Times change and -- despite its adults-only PR posturing -- Las Vegas is swamped with families, often with many children in tow. We surveyed all the big casino companies in Las Vegas and got remarkably similar responses. "You have to be 21 and over to be on the casino floor," said the Golden Nugget’s Chloe Acosta. As for minors, Gary Thompson of Caesars Entertainment says they are "not allowed, except while walking through to rooms or restaurants and accompanied by an adult."

Strollers were banned for a time at Bellagio after Steve Wynn reputedly tripped over one. (MGM Resorts International’s Yvette Monet says the ban is "on the books but the security staff does not enforce it.") However, even Wynn has mellowed. If you get a special tag for your toddler’s stroller, you can perambulate through Wynn Las Vegas and Encore at will.

"I can only speak for Station Casinos (since we clearly offer family-friendly entertainment amenities )," says Vice President Lori Nelson, "as I’m unsure how the guys on the Strip handle things. We have maps located on the walls throughout our casinos that show areas within the property where minors are allowed. There are ‘green’ designated pathways that allow parents to guide them completely around the gaming areas, not through the gaming areas, to allow them to access the hotel, restaurants and entertainment offerings such as movie theatres, bowling, arcades, and concert venues.

"Additionally, at many of our properties, there are convenient entrances into our facilities where the family-friendly amenities are located, so in many of the cases, families/minors can enter from a parking garage or surface-level parking to a convenient entrance where those amenities are offered.

"Guests may always check at the security podium if they have questions or concerns about what areas are designated ‘green’ if they don’t see those maps, but typically we put those maps up by garage entrances, etc."

To this we can add that most Station properties, and a few other casinos around town, have childcare facilities, a list of which you can find in our Visitor Guide section, which also includes a whole array or other useful information, including the dates of major upcoming conventions (useful for figuring out when room rates may peak), transportation tips, our Green guide to eco- and allergy-friendly hotels, attractions, and restaurants, LVA's ever-popular Vegas Webcam feature, city maps, and a whole lot more.
