Question of the Day - 22 March 2015

Q:
I just read room rates for the May 2 fight. I am a local who will be out of town that weekend. Do you know of any way to offer my home as a weekend rental for a couple grand?
A:

If you live proximate to MGM Grand, site of the May 2 Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao showdown, your expectations of price aren’t far out of line. MGM’s Signature condo units can be rented for a modest $1,680 on May 1 and are sold out on the day of the fight. After that, rentals drop to $293 on Sunday and a business-as-usual $95 the following Monday.

You can try AirBNB, which has been described as "kind of the Uber of house rentals," whereby you rent your whole house, or even just a room. Or you could list on VRBO.com (which stands for "Vacation Rental by Owner"). But before you get visions of Benjamins dancing in your head, we’d suggest you listen to real estate expert Robin Camacho, who says, "As a licensed Broker, I would suggest that they check Clark County ordinances created to dissuade 'party houses' by prohibiting rentals of less than 30 days."

In other words, there’s money to be made out there – but not without tangible risk.
