Question of the Day - 15 June 2015

Q:
With the Vegas summer underway, can you tell me which hotels have in-room refrigerators where I can store my own cold drinks etc. and, at those that don’t, can I rent one and if so for how much?
A:

Surprisingly, many Las Vegas hotels have taken the in-room refrigerator route – less surprising in the long-stay accommodations and business traveler-oriented lodgings, but more so when it comes to hotel-casinos.

Starting alphabetically (although for reasons that will be apparent, we veer off from this rigid approach at times), Aliante Casino has them, as does the Ambassador Strip Inn Travelodge. America’s Best Value Inn is among the numerous properties that will rent you a fridge, for $5 a day. Aria will do the same, for $25, as will both Arizona Charlie’s casinos, for $5 plus tax. Artisan will rent you a fridge on a sliding scale of $25 for one night, $20 the second night and $15 every night after that. Aston MonteLago Village has in-room fridges, while suites at Bellagio have them as standard but regular rooms don’t. A rental will set you back $35.

Best Western Main Street only has fridges in suites and doesn’t do rentals, while the Best Western Mardi Gras has them in all rooms, as does the Best Western McCarran. Blair House Suites has college-sized units in its half-suites and full-kitchen ones in its large suites. Boulder Station can rent you a fridge for $10 a night while The Suites (formerly Budget Suites), also on Boulder Highway, has full-sized fridges in every room. Budget Suites Tropicana, Budget Suites Procyon and Budget Suites Rancho follow suit.

Caesars Palace has mini-bars in every room but don’t touch the merchandise unless you’re prepared to pay for it. Otherwise, you can rent a refrigerator for $20 a night. Caesars’ Nobu Hotel makes them available for free if it’s for medicinal purposes. Otherwise it’s a case of first-come, first-served, at $35 night. Circus Circus is a rental-only proposition; $15 a night. Bally's has the same policy and price.

At Candlewood Suites, Comfort Inn & Suites – Henderson, Comfort Inn & Suites (in North Las Vegas), Red Roof Inn (formerly Comfort Inn Las Vegas, hence under ‘C’ here), Cannery Casino Hotel and Eastside Cannery, in-room fridges are a standard amenity. Carriage House gives you a different-sized fridge, depending on the unit you’re renting, ranging from a mini-fridge in a studio to a full-sized in a two-bedroom suite.

Four of Las Vegas’ newer (or newly reinvented) hotels have a variety of policies. Both The Cosmopolitan and the Cromwell come with minibars but refrigerators are an extra $25 a night. If you’re staying at the D, you may want to check to see if you’re getting one of the newly renovated rooms or not, as some of the hotel has upgraded to include fridges, but not completely. You can rent one for $10 a night. Rooms at Delano Las Vegas are fridge-less, though you can rent for $35.

Courtyard Las Vegas – Convention Center (and all Courtyard-branded Vegas-area hotels) come standard with refrigerators. Even the more down-market Siegel Suites Flamingo and Siegel Suites South Las Vegas (formerly Crestwood Suites) have fridges as standard features. They’re also standard in the premium rooms at the Double Tree Hotel but for non-premium rooms you have to rent one at $15 a night. Apartment-style Desert Paradise Resort has fridges in all units, as does Desert Rose Resort.

Meanwhile, Boyd Gaming has a plethora of policies where refrigerators are concerned. They’re a regular room amenity at Gold Coast, Suncoast and the California Hotel. At Sam’s Town and The Orleans, they’re a rental-only proposition, with rates that vary -- $16.80 at The Orleans, $15 at Sam’s Town. While and Main Street Station offers complimentary refrigerators as standard, Fremont Hotel only makes them available for medicinal purposes … say, if you have insulin that must be kept chilled. Independent hotel Downtown Grand is also a rental-only property, with fridges costing $15 per night. Downtown dowager the El Cortez has fridges in its Tower Rooms. In its other ones, you can rent a unit for $5.

Encore and Wynn Las Vegas have in-room fridges that double as minibars, so beware! However, for a $25 flat rate – the only flat rate we encountered in this survey -- you can rent an additional refrigerator. By contrast, Excalibur, much lower on the food chain, charges $25 a day. Upscale residential hotel Element, in Summerlin, has fridges in all units. Embassy Suites Convention Center has them, as does its sibling property on Swenson Street. Ditto all three Emerald Suites hotels, Extended Stay Flamingo and Fairfield Inn Airport. Fairfield Inn South only has them in its suites and you can’t rent one. You can store your perishable items at the front desk but that’s about it.

Station Casinos’ Fiesta Henderson rents them at $15 per night. Fiesta Rancho provides them upon request, free if for medicinal purposes, $10 a night otherwise. The company’s Green Valley Ranch Resort and Red Rock Resort will happily rent you a fridge for $15 a night. It’s the same story at Santa Fe Station, Sunset Station, Texas Station and Palace Station, save that the price is a wallet-friendly $10/night. Days Inn at Wild Wild West (also a Station property) follows the same policy, for $10 a night.

If you can afford to stay at the Four Seasons, they’ll provide you with a refrigerator upon request, for no charge. Sticking with 4, the Four Queens downtown has fridges in all suites. If you’re staying in a standard room, you can rent one for $8. It’s the same policy at the Golden Nugget, except that the rental is $24 there. Downtown’s oldest hotel, the Golden Gate, only offers coolers in its suites and no rentals.

Among the other Caesars Entertainment properties, the Flamingo only provides fridges in recently upgraded rooms, although you can rent one for $15. Harrah’s is rental-only, also for $15, ditto Planet Hollywood. Same at The Linq, except that the rental is $10. Paris-Las Vegas rents them out at $15, unless it’s for medical purposes, in which case it’s free. Only the all-suite Rio has fridges included in all units.

There are seven Hampton Inns in the valley, with a variety of policies. The Henderson, Summerlin, St. Rose Parkway and Speedway locations have fridges as standard amenities. The Red Rock Hampton has them only in king suites, although it makes units available for medicinal needs at no extra charge. The Hampton Inn at McCarran International Airport is fridge-less. They’re also not standard amenities at Hampton’s Tropicana Avenue hotel but it makes them available on request at no charge. The Hard Rock Hotel lacks in-room refrigerators but will rent you one for $20. Hawthorn Suites, in Henderson, has them in every room. It’s the same at Highland Inn Motel. Fridges are a standard, in-room amenity at Hilton Garden Henderson, Hilton Garden Las Vegas Strip South and Hilton Lake Las Vegas.

Best Western Boulder (formerly Holiday Inn) has fridges in all rooms. Another ex-Holiday Inn, Four Points by Sheraton is rental only, $10. Holiday Inn Express Henderson has them in all rooms, as does Holiday Inn Express South Rainbow. They’re only available in executive suites at Holiday Inn Las Vegas South, although you can request one for a standard room. Best Western Plus (formerly Holiday Inn West Las Vegas) has them as a standard amenity, ditto Holiday Inn Express Nellis.

Extended Stay America hotels – including the assimilated Homestead Studio Suites Hotel -- have them in all rooms, as does Crossland Economy Studios (formerly Extended Stay Boulder) You get full-sized fridges at both Homewood Suites’ Henderson and McCarran Airport locations. Hooters Casino Hotel will rent you a refrigerator for $25 a night "unless it’s for medical purposes," whereupon it’s free. Emerald Suites has them, standard. Mini-fridges are the order of the day at Hyatt Place and at Alexis Park, at the Jockey Club but not at the Bridger Inn Hotel downtown. Polo Towers offers a mix of regular and mini-fridges, but they’re standard at JW Marriott Summerlin only in suites, although if you request one, they’re free.

La Quinta Inn Tropicana, La Quinta McCarran, La Quinta Nellis, La Quinta Red Rock (90% full fridges, 10% mini-fridges) all have refrigerators in every room but La Quinta Summerlin offers them in some double-occupancy rooms – for a $10 upcharge – not in others. The former Lake Mead Motel, now America’s Best Value Inn, didn’t answer their phone. In-room fridges are a standard amenity at Las Vegas Marriott Suites. Same with Las Vegas South Strip Travelodge and the Lucky Club Casino. The Longhorn Hotel & Casino informs us that they don’t have in-room fridges but "they will soon, because we’ll be getting renovated."

Luxor only has them in its suites but you can rent them for $25/night. At Mandalay Bay, they’re restricted to the hospitality suites but again you can rent one, this time for $35. Mandarin Oriental provides complimentary mini-fridges upon request. MGM Grand only rents, at $25 a day plus tax. (Skylofts has refrigerators as part of its wet bars.) It also costs $25 a night at The Mirage and at Monte Carlo, which also provides ones for medical purposes for free. It’s rental-only at New York-New York, which will set you back $30. Only at Vdara does every room come with a fridge.

Venetian and Palazzo will rent you a fridge at $25 a night. They’re a standard amenity at Palms Place but the original Palms requires you to rent them for $25 plus tax. Platinum Hotel & Spa has them as part of full kitchens while downtown’s Plaza Hotel has no in-room fridges. They can be rented for $20 a night or are free if needed for medical purposes. They’re a standard amenity at Fortune Hotel & Suites (formerly Ramada Las Vegas) but Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel will only make them available for medical use.

All four Residence Inn properties offer refrigerators as a standard amenity, as do Rodeway Inn Convention Center and Royal Resort (formerly Royal House). Rumor has them in buildings One and Ten. All other units would require a $10/day rental. Siegel Slots & Suites has in-room fridges, as does Siena Suites Hotel but not Silver Sevens Hotel & Casino, where a fridge will set you back $12 a night, unless it’s for medicine, in which case it’s comped. The policy is the same at the Silverton but the price is slightly higher: $15 (free for meds). The new kid on the block, SLS Las Vegas, doesn’t have in-room fridges but will rent one to you for $25. South Point doesn’t have them, either, but will rent you one for $15/day.

Neither the Tropicana Avenue nor the Boulder Highway Motel 6 has fridges and Motel 6 I-15 only has two rooms equipped with them. Super 8 Motel Nellis doesn’t have them (but will rent a few for $5), Super 8 Las Vegas does, and Super 8 Ellis Island only has them in its upgraded rooms and suites but will rent you one for $15.

Stratosphere only has them in its suites but will rent you one for $10. Nellis Suites Main Gate has them, as does Springhill Suites, near the Las Vegas Convention Center, and as do Staybridge Suites. Treasure Island has them; so do Towne Place Suites. Despite $200 million in recent upgrades, the Tropicana does not have in-room fridges, although you can rent them for $15/night. For all its troubles, Trump International has fridges in all units. So does the humbler Tuscany Suites & Casino.

Howard Johnson Las Vegas (formerly Value Place) has fridges in every room. Ditto for more-upscale Westgate Flamingo Bay and mammoth Westgate Las Vegas. In-room refrigerators can be requested but are "not guaranteed" at Westin Lake Las Vegas, due to a shortage of equipment. Westin Las Vegas also has a few refrigerators available upon request (and a $150 deposit). Best Western Plus – formerly Wingate by Wyndham – has them in all rooms, as does Wyndham Grand Desert, close by LVA headquarters.

The former Americana 5, now Stay Suites of America, has fridges in all rooms. Aviator Suites, formerly Americana 5 Inn & Suites, does the same. Bluegreen Club 36 has refrigerators in all units.

Update 15 June 2015
Some reader input:
  • "Just to let you know, the renovated Jubilee Tower at Bally's has in-room refrigerators.
  • "Your answer to today's QoD is not 100% correct: I know all rooms at Main Street Station have refrigerators in them at no cost." [Ed: You are correct, and we have no idea why we were told otherwise! Since corrected in the above answer -- thanks!]
  • "We just stayed at the Tropicana and it does have a frig in the suites; not sure about regular rooms." [Ed: Only for rent by the night.]
  • "What have you got against the Cosmopolitan? Other places, you indicate the types of rooms that have a frig and those that require a rental, but at the Cosmopolitan, you imply that only rentals are available. I typically stay in a 1-bedroom suite there and every room I've been in has a full refrigerator." [Ed: Terrace Studio accommodation and up, only; the City Rooms don't."
