Question of the Day - 30 June 2015

Q:
I am looking out from my hotel room at the Wynn golf course. Over the years I have probably had this view five or six times. I never see anybody playing the course, although I am sure it happens. So how many rounds of golf are played on the course in a year, what is par, how long is the course and how do you get to play it?
A:

Wynn Golf Club is a par-70 course, rolling across 137 acres, and designed by Tom Fazio and Steve Wynn, who reoriented the old Desert Inn golf course 90 degrees, so that players tee off north and south, without having the sun in their eyes. Some 800,000 cubic yards of soil had to be moved to accomplish this feat. In addition to planting 100,000 new shrubs, Wynn saved 1,200 trees from the Desert Inn course (some over 50 years old) and replanted them. Natural groundwater feeds the streams, marshes, and 11 water hazards on the course.

The press kit for the course lists a championship length of 7,042 yards. (There are also lesser "Back," "Middle," "Executive" and "Forward" yardages available. The course is open to the public, although only by reservation. Collared shirts are required and denim is frowned upon.

The putting surfaces are seeded with Pennlinks II Bentgrass while the fairways and tees are carpeted with Tifway II Hybrid Bermuda grass. The course is closed for three weeks every autumn so that it can be overseeded with Palmer Prelude Ryegrass. To play those verdant links will cost you $500, plus a gratuity for your caddy.
