Question of the Day - 10 September 2015

Q:
What percentage of fares are picked up by cabs at the airport compared to the amount picked up from the Strip/Fremont street? Are Uber cars allowed to pick up at the airport and, if so, how does one call for one?
A:

Unfortunately, the Clark County Taxicab Authority does not require cab companies to report the point of origin of their fares. Fortunately, McCarran International Airport does require that similar information be made public, so we can paint you a partial picture. "The agency is currently in the process of evaluating new technology systems that would allow for real-time monitoring of rides. This new technology will also be capable of collecting and storing service and statistical data including information related to the origination of rides hailed throughout the county," Taxicab Authority spokeswoman Teri Williams adds.

Last year, according to Williams, cab companies in the Las Vegas area provided 27,600,000 rides. "Historically, about 12 percent of rides are originated from McCarran Airport," she says. The Clark County Department of Aviation's Chris Jones pins that down even more precisely. "From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2014, there were 3,699,599 cabs loaded at McCarran," he writes, "which was a 4.5 percent increase from 2013's count, as well as a new record-high annual total."

Clark County has approved both Uber and Lyft to operate at McCarran but service won’t begin until October. The county is currently hammering out with the two companies how they will obtain business licenses "and how and where they'll be expected to operate at the airport," according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Richard Velotta. He goes on to report that proposals by Lyft and Uber to operate at McCarran will likely be considered at the October 20 meeting of the Clark County Commission.

Clark County Department of Aviation Director Rosemary Vassiliadis told Velotta that Uber pickups would be made from designated stalls on garage level 2M (in Terminal 1) and Terminal 3’s garage level Level V. "We'll start with 32 stalls, but we have room for growth," added Vassiliadis.
