Question of the Day - 19 October 2015

Q:
With its reputation as the marriage "capital," is there a list of notables/celebrities who were married in Las Vegas?
A:

There wasn't ... but there is now! Actually, that's not really accurate: We came across multiple lists while researching this, but not one single list as comprehensive as is (we hope) what follows. Doubtless there may be some omissions even to this, however, which we put together using myriad sources, so if you know of a well-known couple who tied the knot in Las Vegas that isn't included, please drop us a line. In the meantime, here goes:

  • 1942 - Mickey Rooney and Ava Gardner tied the knot at The Little Church of the West. (It didn't last.)
  • 1943 - 1943 - Betty Grable married bandleader Harry James at the same venue. (Neither did this one!)
  • 1945 - Singer/actress Deanna Durbin married Felix Jackson.
  • 1949 - Actor George Sanders wed Zsa Zsa Gabor, also at the Little Church of the West (which seems to have had the monopoly on celebrity unions back then, but on the other hand, there were only a handful of chapels to choose from in the '40s)
  • 1953 - Actress Rita Hayworth and singer Dick Haymes did the deed at The Sands.
  • 1954 - Kirk Douglas married Ann Buydens at the Sahara and, unlike the majority of those unions included on this list, that one has stood the test of time.
  • 1954 - Also that year, actress Arlene Dahl wed matinee idol Fernando Lamas in The Little Church of the West.
  • 1955 - Joan Crawford married Pepsi-Cola tycoon Alfred Steele at the Flamingo (setting the scene for a dark family life later exposed in Mommie Dearest, the memoir of the couple's adopted daughter).
  • 1956 - Boulder City (so, not technically Vegas, but close enough) was the chosen location for Broadway star Carol Channing's wedding to local Vegas advertising and TV executive Charles Lowe.
  • 1957 - Another of the rare success stories, this year saw Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme tying the knot, not at a casino or wedding chapel, but in the home of El Rancho owner Beldon Katleman.
  • 1958 - Another one with a happy ending, in January of this year movie stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward married at the El Rancho.
  • 1959 - Beneath an arch woven from Louisville Sluggers, Cleveland Indians second baseman, and later New York Yankees manager Billy Martin, was married to Gretchen Winkler at the Desert Inn.
  • 1961 - Shirley Bassey married (gay) film director Kenneth Hume. (Needless to say, that one didn't work out so well.)
  • 1962 - Mary Tyler Moore married NBC Vice President Grant Tinker at the Little White Wedding Chapel.
  • 1963 - Dinah Washington and Dick Lane were married at the Little Church of the West.
  • 1963 - Betty White married her third husband -- the keeper! -- Allen Ludden, himself a TV host, at the Sands.

  • 1989 - In the same year, actor/rocker Corey Feldman married Vanessa Marcil of "Beverly Hills 90210."
  • 1989 - This year also saw basketball legend Michael Jordan marrying Juanita Vanoy at A Little White Wedding Chapel in another nuptial success story (on the back of which, the chapel now offers a $539 "Michael Jordan wedding package," although we're not quite sure what that comprises that relates to the basketball star - we don't think it's a guarantee of marital bliss, although it does include what's described as a "Rules for a happy marriage" keepsake.
  • 1991 - Richard Gere married supermodel Cindy Crawford in 1991 at the Little Church of the West.
  • 1991 - Redd Foxx and Ka Ha Cho were married at the Little Church of the West in July of this year.

A few other famous people who tied the knot in Las Vegas, but for whom we're not sure when or to whom (on account of them having had more than one spouse) or frankly, because we were simply too "celebrity-wedding'd-out" by a certain point to investigate any further, include: "Kojak" actor Telly Savalas; Lars Ulrich of Metallica; actress/author/activist Heather Thomas; sax player David Sanborn; Mel "The Velvet Fog" Tormé; Tom Petty; Bo Derek; Sugar Shane Mosley; James Caan; talk show host Ricki Lake; Erin Brokovich; Slash of Guns N' Roses; Ernest Borgnine; boxer Leon Spinks; and soccer legend Pele.

According to the Wee Kirk o’ the Heather Wedding Chapel, which opened in 1940 and is still marrying couples today, they received a call from Colonel Tom Parker shortly before Elvis' death, informing them that the singer intended to marry his then-girlfriend Ginger at their establishment. The chapel's website states that a date was set and that Parker, along with a sizable entourage, all showed up for the event. Two notable no-shows, however, were Elvis and Ginger, and a few months later The King was dead.

We know there are still more names to add to the list, so fee free to send additional suggestions our way and we'll keep adding...
