It will be at the V Theatre in the Miracle Mile shopping mall of Planet Hollywood. The opening will be on an as-yet-undetermined date in February, sharing a stage with Zombie Burlesque. It’s a nothing-sacred satire of Vegas entertainment, with zingers aimed at Criss Angel and Mariah Carey. Las Vegas Review-Journal critic Mike Weatherford was invited to sit in on a rehearsal and found Spoofical to be very much a work in progress. By Saxe standards, Spoofical will be a major production, involving a cast of 12 plus a live band.
"I'm sort of at the point where I'm fortunate I can do whatever I want," Saxe told Weatherford. "I get to play around and do all the stuff I always wanted to do, but was afraid to because you had the casino and everyone else getting involved." One skit sure to rile audience was described by Weatherford as follows: "the quick hit in which Elvis Presley's ‘2001’ music built up to a dramatic introduction, only to have the spotlight land on a coffin, which opens to reveal a skeleton in a jumpsuit."
Saxe is that rarity of rarities, a Strip impresario who grew up in Las Vegas. He’s also not afraid to speak his mind, as when he said that only Cirque du Soleil could do an Elvis Presley tribute show (the short-lived Viva Elvis) in Las Vegas and screw it up.
So, when you go, expect sacred cows to be gored. A parody of Siegfried and Roy is promised and, when Weatherford dropped by, a mash-up of Jabbawockeez and Star Wars was being brainstormed. Go expecting to be offended by something and you’ll probably be all right.
