Question of the Day - 11 April 2016

Q:
What is going on with the solar power plant in El Dorado Valley, south of Railroad Pass? It has been expanding for several years, but now it looks like some large "older" sections have been removed? Is this a technology upgrade?
A:

We confess to being stumped, since we talked to the people at Nevada Solar One, the largest array in that area, and to its ownership group, Sempra Gas & Power, and if anything, you should be seeing more panels in that area, because Sempra is building an array of its own – Copper Mountain Solar 4 – around the fringes of Solar One. When completed, sometime later this year, the 94-megawatt facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power 42,000 homes. However, other than the construction jobs (350) being created, the benefits will not be seen locally: The primary customer for Copper Mountain Solar 4 will be Southern California Edison, which has a 20-year contract with Sempra, subject to regulatory approval.

Calls to Boulder City officialdom also elicited denials with regard to anyone having removed any panels, or being involved in new construction; if anyone out there knows something we don't, please drop us a line.
