Question of the Day - 28 June 2016

Q:
Which casino had a margarita fountain?
A:

Hmm. With this one, you may have stumped us. During a 1953 remodel, the Flamingo added its famous "Champagne Tower" out front. One of the earliest examples of neon on the embryonic Las Vegas Strip, the tubular tower lit up at night with sparkling neon "bubbles," but there was no actual bubbly to be had from the attraction, which endured until 1967, when it was subsumed by another remodel and the relocating of the property's entryway.

In order to mark the grand opening of the Margaritaville-themed casino-within-a-casino back on October 14, 2011, also at the Flamingo. The festivities got underway at 5 o’clock in the evening, naturally, when Margaritaville broke the World Record for the largest margarita ever made, a fact verified by Guinness World Records. Apparently, it took six months of planning and an estimated 60 people and 300 hours to actually mix the 8,500-gallon beverage, which was named "Lucky Rita" and was prepared in a tank 16 ft. 11 in. tall a 10 ft. in diameter. The ingredients included: 2,134.95 US gal Margaritaville Gold tequila; 2,282.18 US gal Margaritaville Margarita mix; 729.03 US gal Margaritaville triple sec; and 3,400 US gal Lemon-x margarita mix.

Lucky Rita was available to the public until October 23 and smashed the previous Guinness World Record, set in Las Vegas the previous year, when Ricardo's Mexican Restaurant (Flamingo and Decatur) celebrated its 30th anniversary by mixing up a 7,500 gallon monster. Today, you can still order a 45 oz "Booze in the Blender" monster margarita for $33.95 (and you get to keep the blender cup as a souvenir).

Aside from these examples, all that we can think of is the former Westward Ho property, which was known for its free "champagne"/Bloody Mary" fountain, which dispensed dubious, if bottomless, beverages for years and was briefly revived as part of the casino's send-of, before it closed in 2005. Aside from the novelty factor, the fountain was at least an available means to attempt to wash down the other delicacy for which the Westward Ho was renowned, namely it's 3/4 lb "MegaDog". Or you could pair your dog with a 27 oz. margarita, for $1.49 each. Those were the days...

If there's another adult-beverage fountain of note that has eluded us, please feel free to drop us a line.
