Question of the Day - 28 September 2016

Q:
Regarding your QoD response about various crimes. Do you have stats on where they occur? Tourists? Tourist areas? Or the areas know to not be so "nice?
A:

We received several questions of this sort, including one from someone considering relocating to Las Vegas and wondering about residential neighborhoods to avoid, in response to our recent crime QoD (9/18/2016). Thanks to all for submitting them. This one’s for you.

Metro doesn’t officially compile statistics of that fashion. However, if you log into Metro's online application, CrimeMapping, you can find much of the information for which you’re looking.

Set the date range you want to search and, over a map of the Vegas area, icons representing every police call during that period will be superimposed. (And a lot of them will be on the Las Vegas Strip.) Click on any icon and you'll get a pop-up box with details: the crime, address, day and time, and incident number.

For instance, during the week of September 12 to 18, there was an assault at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue – site of New York-New York, Excalibur, MGM Grand, and the Tropicana. A person with a knife was apprehended near Silver Sevens casino, at the intersection of Paradise Road and Flamingo Road. And multiple incidents of burglary were reported in the 3600 block of the Strip.

The Strip, however, doesn't appear to be nearly as crime-infested as, for instance, "Crack Alley" between Paradise Road and Maryland Parkway, north of Flamingo Road. We can't imagine what a tourist, or even a local, would be doing there anyway — other than just passing by in a vehicle.

Caution is always advised when you're new to an area, whether in Las Vegas or elsewhere. However, Metro's handy-dandy CrimeMapping may be a useful tool in deciding where you want to go (or live). It certainly helps you make informed choices about places to avoid in Sin City.
