Question of the Day - 23 October 2016

Q:
Can you tell me if Lonnie Hammargren’s Museum Home will be open this year and the latest details?
A:

We described this house in detail in the QoD on October 9, 2006, and members can read all about it there.

Here, briefly, we’ll just say that Lonnie Hammargren is a retired neurosurgeon, erstwhile NASA flight surgeon, former lieutenant governor of Nevada, and general eccentric and self-promoter. Since he bought the original property located at 4318 Ridgecrest Drive (near Flamingo and Sandhill roads) some 40-plus years ago, Dr. Lonnie annexed two neighboring properties to provide enough room for the millions of dollars' worth of Nevada memorabilia and artifacts he and his wife Sandy have collected and are on display inside the house and out.

Dr. Hammargren says he spends 50 hours a week on what he calls his "Hammargren Home of Nevada History."

The home and property have hosted crowds on the weekend closest to Nevada Day (October 31; it commemorates the day Nevada achieved statehood in 1864) since 1971.

Every year, Dr. Hammargren, now 78, says he tells Sandy that this might be the final year of the tour, but last year, it turns out, wasn’t that.

This year, the tours will take place on Saturday October 29 and Sunday October 30 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission has been $15, but could be more this year. It’s been reported that 1,500 people per day tour the property.
