Question of the Day - 21 December 2016

Q:
Parking Part 2
A:

First, about yesterday's question and answer.

Yes, we did receive a QoD submission with the one word: parking. No upper-case "p," no question mark, not even a period. (We edited it to "Parking." We thought that would make it less weird-looking, at least a little. Yes, editors can edit one word.)

It's the first time we've ever received a one-word question and we thought it was funny, clever, and infused with innuendo. Who'd've thought that the word "parking" could pack such a powerful punch?

Second, we figured a one-word answer was appropriate for a one-word question. So that's what we gave it. Some of you understood and were amused ("Did you get hacked?" And, "The QoD has a one-word reply? An internal error? An MGM Parking Garage Nevada DL reader error? lol"); some understood and weren't amused ("If it were April 1, I'd get the joke"); some didn't get it ("That's it? Uh-huh?"). But it certainly got everyone's attention! (It's the second time in all these years we've answered a question with one word.)

Third, of course, parking is a huge issue nowadays in Las Vegas and we get lots and lots of questions about it. So in another first, today we're publishing all the recent ones -- exactly as they were submitted, so you can not only see what people are wondering and thinking, but also how we see your questions and comments day in and day out.

Tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday, we'll address all your questions and comments.

I'm visiting Las Vegas in feb and was wondering what the casinos are charging for parking. Is it by the hour or by the day and if I'm staying at a particular one is there a flat rate or do I get. A discount . Also if I visit a sister property will I get a discount or will my players card help to reduce the fee .

With Ceasars joining MGM in paid parking, can you give us a rundown of the various "exemptions" to the fees? I come to Vegas 1-2 times a year and always rented a car and parked and gambled well at different casinos. I do have both the "Total Rewards" and MGM cards, but I understand only the upper tiers are eligible for the comped parking.

First, let me state that I'm totally against the new paid parking on the strip and do believe it will hurt their casino business in the long run, especially from California visitors who drive to Vegas to mainly gamble. And I've always used valet parking in the past and was always a generous tipper to the valet, whom I think have a very difficult job (especially in the oppressive heat for a good part of the year). But another part of the new paid parking trend on the strip that it seems is never discussed is the impact it may be having on the hotels valet employees. Being a Valet was (is?) a well paying job, mainly through tips. My question is; How has the paid valet parking affected the valet staffs incomes? Have their incomes decreased drastically now that valet parking has a very hefty fee involved, which is much higher than what patrons previously used to tip the valet, when the parking was free....an average $5 tip as compared to a $15-$20 parking fee now? (I know I would feel like I was being doubly ripped off if it's still necessary to tip the valet when I'm now being charged 3-4 times the amount to park than I used to tip them, for a service that was previously free). I feel it's now the hotels responsibility to pay the valets a higher wage, that isn't dependent on tips, since they are now lining their pockets with the increased revenue from parking fees. Did the hotels give them all big raises to make up for the decrease in income from lost tips, LOL. How have the staff been affected, does anyone know or even care?

Do hotel guest pay for parking at the places that are starting to charge now or just people coming to visit for the day?

I'm thinking the rental car companies will be taking a hit with this paid parking landslide. What are your thoughts?

Is there any update to the parking situation on the strip and surrounding casinos around the strip? I recently got an email that Caesars properties will now be charging. Are most or all hotels going to follow suit? What will the cost be? Has this been profitable for MGM? I feel very put out as someone who frequently drives to Vegas this will definitely put a dent in my amount of trips.

So is the reason for the hotels charging for parking really that people were parking for free and moving onto other properties (as suggested in the LVRJ piece http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/columns/inside-gaming/don-t-strip-casino-parking-fees-blame-the-airlines)? Surely everyone would lose/gain equally wouldn't they?

If I'm staying at an mgm property will I still be charged full price for parking and can I go to other mgm property's on the same day and not get charged again

Hi - Now that almost all casinos will charge for parking in 2017 I will start using the monorail more often. In the past I would park at SLS (SHH!! Don't tell them ;) but I'm guessing there will be a crackdown on that soon. So where can I legitimately park for the monorail, hopefully without charge and near the SLS? Thank you!.

With the new trend to charge for parking. I don't think the strip casinos care about the locals. What percentage of the strip revenue comes from locals. It can't be very much if they are so willing to give it up. And how long will it take to know what the real impact is on their revenue? Also would love to know what the owners of the station casinos thinks about it? They must of popped a champagne cork or two at the news.

Have there been any adjustments/modifications to the parking fees at the hotel/casinos that now levy theses charges? On the strip? Downtown? Any rumors that other properties are considering adding these fees?

Now that so many Strip casinos charge to park, what about the Golden Nugget downtown--specifically valet parking? In the past, I always used the GN's valet parking service, and tipped both when I dropped the car off and again when I picked it up. I got great service and was happy to give good tips directly to the guys who did the work. It made a downtown visit easy, because while I ate at the GN and played there primarily, I could get out and walk around when I needed a break. If GN now charges for valet, are there any downtown casinos that don't charge to park? Frankly, I think it's really stinky for any casino to charge you for parking when you're gonna go in and, most likely, lose a chunk of money there. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

On our most recent visit, we experienced for the first time dealing with paying for parking. Since we have a high enough M-Life status (at this time anyway) we never had to pay at those properties, and the other casinos have not yet adopted this practice. But like the resort fees, we figure it's only a matter of time. We discussed the possibility of not renting a car for our next visit and just try getting around via free shuttles, public transportation, etc. and the occasional taxi for hard to get to spots, like the Cracker Barrel mentioned in today's QoD. Our question is this. Has there already been or do you foresee any downstream impact on the car rental companies if and when all the casinos start charging for parking?

How's the pay parking working out for the casinos are they seeing any decline in attendance especially in valet services?

At Mgm properties, is there any discount on parking with a handicap placard?

With paid parking a reality on the strip and with the increase in resort fees and the lessening of free drinks/comps, I was wondering if these in any way has affected LVA membership numbers. Care to comment?
